I took this shot in South Africa during my recent photo tour there (South Africa plus Botswana). I captured the Milky Way during a 30 second exposure, and during that time my guide used a flashlight to illuminate the tree from the side. The flashlight was turned on for about 5 seconds only, and I specifically wanted side lighting for the drama of this type of light. Several test exposures had to be made to determine the settings. I used a 24-105mm lens set to 24mm, the aperture was f/4, I used a tripod of course, and the ISO was 3200. I used daylight white balance to capture the beautiful blue tones in the sky. In post-processing, I used Nik Dfine 2.0 to mitigate the noise as well as the Luminance slider in Adobe Camera Raw.
