This is a night landscape shot in the Palouse, western Washington state. It is a 30 second exposure, and during that time I illuminated the barn, the trees, and the foreground field with a flashlight. This is definitely a trial and error scenario, and it usually takes several test shots to get it right. No meter can accurately read the flashlight over a long exposure, so I use manual exposure mode and choose the f/stop and shutter based on the test shots. The illumination in the clouds is entirely natural -- the detail was brought out because of the accumulation of light during the long exposure. I took this with the Tamron 15-30mm wide angle lens I was testing, and the other settings were f/2.8 and 2500 ISO. The original color of the weathered wood on the barn was gray, and I made it red in Photoshop because there are so many red barns in the area and the brilliant color helps make the shot.
