I took this picture of a panther chameleon during my semi-annual frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis. It is one of the unique animals native to Madagascar. I took this picture with a 50mm macro lens, and my settings were 1/125, f/32, and 200 ISO. I also used a ring flash which provided even and shadowless illumination. Even though we use natural-looking backgrounds in the workshop, due to the light fall-off from the flash I replaced the background in Photoshop with out of focus foliage. Notice the relatively shallow depth of field even though I used a very small lens aperture of f/32. That occurred because the subject-to-flash distance was only about 5 inches. The greater the magnification, the less DOF you have. My next frog and reptile workshop will be June 12-13.
