When you are photographing a pet, get down low and shoot at eye level. This creates a much more intimate and compelling shot. Even if a dog or cat is lying on the floor, like my great Pyrenees, Princey, when he was eight weeks old, shoot from a prone position on the floor (unless you have a camera with an articulating LCD monitor that can angle upward so you can lean down from a kneeling position and shoot from floor level). For this shot of Princey on the kitchen floor, I used a 300mm focal length so I didn't disturb him in his half sleep mode.
