When I visited the Philippines in 2002, I was disappointed that I'd missed the Ati-atihan festival by just three weeks. So, I asked the concierge in my hotel if he could setup a photo shoot with some of the participants in the festival. He arranged these three young boys in Neptune-like costumes, and I thought with their painted skin in contrast with the white shells they looked quite striking. The festival takes place in the streets, so I thought I'd do something different and position the boys in shallow water at the beach. This is Boracay Island, and there are beautiful beaches everywhere. I took this shot with one of my film cameras, the Mamiya 7, and a 43mm lens (equivalent to a 21mm lens in the full frame digital format). When shooting in shallow ocean water, I'm extremely careful not to get a single drop of salt water on my gear. Salt water is absolutely deadly for electronics. My settings were unrecorded, but they were probably 1/250 at f/11 with Fujichrome Provia 100 slide film. The large transparency was scanned by an Imacon scanner to digitize it.
