Right next to our hotel at Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland was this quaint church (the name of it is Reykjahlíðarkirkja -- don't try to pronounce this because you might hurt yourself!), and it was illuminated at night. The aurora borealis appeared behind it -- like you see here -- but it was not possible to photograph the scene as I saw it because the light on the church was so much brighter than the aurora. The exposure of 15 seconds and 1600 ISO with f/2.8, perfect for the northern lights, would completely overexpose the church. Therefore, I had to make two separate exposures and then put the two shots together in Photoshop to recreate the scene. Another problem was that the orange/yellow sodium vapor light on the church made the entire ground orange in the night shot. To avoid this, I photographed the church at dawn so the cobalt blue sky neutralized the undesirable orange cast on ground.
