This is a lemon hourglass frog native to Central and South America. I photographed it my semi-annual frog and reptile workshop held in Kansas City, Missouri. I used a 50mm macro lens and, for the lighting, I used a ring flash. When used very close to a subject -- e.g. within 8 inches -- this type of flash provides soft lighting that envelopes the small body of the frog. Notice how both the dorsal and ventral surfaces are illuminated nicely with no harsh shadows. With macro photography, I almost always use f/32 for maximum depth of field (notwithstanding focus stacking). The flash is so close to the subject that a low ISO can be used in conjunction with the small aperture. My next frog workshop will be Jan. 22-23.
