There is something special about cats, and this is especially true of big cats. In Africa, photographers are happy to photograph giraffes, rhinos, and waterbuck, but our blood pressure goes sky high when we get a great picture of a leopard or cheetah. In the Pantanal region of Brazil, the same is true. Giant river otters, caiman, and capybara are good subjects, but there's nothing like capturing a strong picture of a jaguar in the wild. I took this picture with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto, and my settings were 1/1250, f/9, and 640 ISO. Even though the cat was walking slowly, I still used a fast shutter because I was shooting from a boat and, as I've mentioned in the past, it's very frustrating when a picture is 'almost' sharp. With wildlife, I now choose shutter speeds to guarantee tack sharp images even if it seems like overkill. The boats we use in the Pantanal are low to the water, and that means we can get these eye-level shots that make the pictures particularly dramatic. My next photo tour to the Pantanal is in late October, 2022.
