I find roses difficult to photograph. I'm not sure why, but they seem to be more beautiful when I look at them than when I see pictures of them. This image is the only instance where I've been happy with what I captured. I actually photographed this in a hotel lobby in Peru with a 50mm macro lens and a ring flash. The graphic design of the petals was perfect, and the gentle gradation from yellow to red gave nice dimension to the flower. The light falloff made the background black, and that allows us to focus on nothing else but the perfection of the rose. In post-processing, I added 'glamour glow' in Nik Software. My settings were 1/160, f/32, and 320 ISO. The combination of the small lens aperture and the relatively fast shutter eliminated the influence of the ambient light in the lobby.
