I am in Jakarta, Indonesia right now at the beginning of my photography tour here. My group went to the old harbor to photograph rows of huge fishing boats, and for this image I used the new 100-400mm Canon telephoto lens to compress the perspective. I needed complete depth of field from the foreground to the distant background, so I used f/16. My shutter speed had to be fast enough to use the telephoto and still get tack sharp pictures, so I chose 1/500th of a second. The ISO was 800. In post processing, I added color saturation, vibrance, clarity, and contrast as well as a gradient in the sky to darken it, and then with Nik's Color Efext Pro 4 I applied the filter 'tonal contrast'. All of these artistic embellishments were done to taste. There is no formula to use -- it's just what looks good to me. Tomorrow morning we fly to the Indonesian portion of Borneo for our adventure to photograph orangutans.
