Today I went to the beautiful ruins of an abbey here in England and was surprised to see a few wild ring-necked pheasants. They were surprisingly unfazed by my close approach. I lied on the grass to get this low perspective, and I took the picture with a Canon 100-500mm telephoto. The bird was illuminated by the morning sun while the background vegetation was shaded by a nearby tree. Exposing for the pheasant meant the plants behind it went almost black, dramatizing the image. I waited for the Bir to look straight ahead so I could capture the striking profile. My settings were 1/500, f/7.1, and 400 ISO.
