All penguins seem to have a comedic air about them, but the rockhoppers are especially humorous. It’s probably the hairdo. They are very curious, and as I was photographing this seascape vista in the Falkland Islands using the lichen-covered rocks as a foreground, this penguin waddled over to me and posed in front of my camera. I used a 14mm wide angle lens for the shot which tells you how close we were. Even though lenses that are ultra wide have incredible depth of field, when used very close to a foreground subject, the dof can be compromised to a certain degree. That’s why I used a fairly small lens aperture. I wanted to insure that both the penguin (which I focused on) and the distant horizon were both sharp. My settings were 1/1000, f/13, and 400 ISO.
