The longer I live, the more convinced I am that animals have deep emotions. If you're a dog lover, you know that when you leave home for even an hour and then return, your dog is ecstatic. The tail goes crazy, the body language is all about excitement, and the tongue is all about kissing you. I've seen the same expression of emotion in other animals, too, especially lions. (Youtube is full of videos of the profound bond that's possible between lions and people). I captured this romantic interlude in the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya with a 500mm lens, and my settings were 1/1000, f/8, and 200 ISO. I now use shutter speeds that could be considered overkill -- in other words, faster than one might think is necessary -- because I'm tired of taking pictures that are 'almost' sharp. With super fast shutter speeds, as long as you can handle the weight of the camera and telephoto, you don't need a tripod or bean bag. Shooting this way feels much less inhibiting if you can manage it.
