I just concluded the first day of my Winter Wildlife Workshop in Montana. It was cold today -- we started in -1 degree Fahrenheit weather -- but the animals we photographed were beautiful. This is a black timber wolf running through a forest. In the warmth of the hotel before we went out, I suggested to my group that they preset their camera to manual exposure mode, 1/1250, f/11 to f/16, and auto ISO. Because the diffused, early morning light was muted, this made the ISO setting for this shot 4000. I used eye-tracking AF on the Canon R5 and my lens was the new 100-500mm telephoto. The frame rate I used was set to 12 fps. I used daylight white balance, and in post-processing I removed the slight bluish cast that resulted from that setting. With all the new technology, keeping a fast moving subject in focus is easier than it used to be, but it's still not a piece of cake. It is still a tough challenge.
