I've been to Africa so many times, but I've only seen a serval cat on two different occasions. This one was in the golden light of sunset. In a shot like this, using autofocus can be a challenge because grasses and other elements present multiple planes of focus. Sometimes the AF mechanism is fooled into focusing on those other elements. In this situation, I quickly switched to a single focus point so I could zero in on the cat's face. If the serval had been in the grass, as happens often, then even a single focus point wouldn't work. I've lost too many shots because grasses in front of an animal's face interfered with correct focus. Now I change to manual focus and focus on the subject the old fashioned way. My settings were 1/250, f/10, and 800 ISO.
