It's funny how camera technology has changed our expectations and our ability to capture amazing pictures. I remember back in the film days when a frame rate of 5 per second was considered essentially warp speed in the picture taking world. Why would anyone need more than that? Now, you couldn't even give a camera like that away because no one would want it. I shot this picture in Canada of a snowy owl gliding just inches above the snow at 20 fps, and now even that isn't the fastest speed available. In conjunction with lightning fast autofocus, we can get shots of fast moving subjects that, in the past, was virtually impossible. My settings for this picture were 1/3200, f/10, and 1600 ISO, and I used a 100-500mm Canon zoom handheld. This image is uncropped -- I got lucky in that the tips of the wings weren't cut off.
