This is Cape Lookout Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This area of the East Coast receives a great deal of lightning, but the sky was calm and boring when I was there. So, not to be disappointed by reality, I added the storm clouds and lightning plus the beam of light. When you add lightning to a sky, it doesn't have to be selected using Photoshop's many selection tools. All you need to do is copy and paste the lightning image onto the sky, and then use the blend mode 'lighten' in the layers palette. This eliminates the dark portion of the lightning image leaving only the bolts and the natural glow from the powerful discharge of electricity. Most of my lightning images are taken at night with a 30 second exposure, f/8 as the aperture, and 200 ISO.
