I've spent a lot of time photographing orangutans in Indonesian Borneo, and I've only seen this remarkable pose of an alpha male once. My photo tour group was walking on a well-worn path to the feeding platform that draws orangs in from the dense jungle when we came upon the large male posing for us right next to the path. It was one of those situations where I had the wrong lens on my camera, and I had to feverishly change lenses, hoping the orang wouldn't move. I switched from my 500mm to a 24-105mm and grabbed the shot. The focal length used for this composition was 55mm. My settings were 1/250, f/5.6, and 640 ISO. The only thing I did digitally to this image was lighten the eyes.
