I took this shot of an alpha male orangutan in the Indonesian portion of Borneo. One of the photo tours I conduct to this island nation focuses on wildlife and nature, and because I love photographing primates, the orangs are one of my favorite subjects here. My photo tour group and I were walking to one of the feeding stations in the jungle that brings so many of these great apes within telephoto range. Suddenly we passed this huge male just watching us from his perch right next to the trail. I quickly switched lenses; I took off my 100-500mm lens and put on a 24-105mm, never thinking I'd be photographing a wild orangutan with a wide angle. The focal length for this shot ended up being 55mm, and the settings were 1/250, f/5.6, and 640 ISO. I had to open up the shadows in post-processing because the influence of the bright sky made the orang a bit underexposed. In my haste to get the shot, I focused more on the composition rather than the exposure.

Frank Binder - This guy’s name is Roger. I’ve also photographed him in roughly the same area.
