This is the reason I moved from California to Tennessee. I took this picture from my driveway in the San Fernando Valley, a large suburb of Los Angeles, in October, 2003. It's a firestorm that had crested the hills behind my house during the infamous 'fire season' that occurs every year in Southern California. I used the equivalent of a 135mm lens which tells you how close the fire was to my shooting position. Just as my neighbors and I were about to evacuate, the wind changed direction and blew the flames away from us. My settings for this night shot were not recorded, but I took this with film and my educated guess is 1/30, f/5.6, and 100 ISO (Fujichrome Provia 100). I used a tripod as well.
