I posted a shot of this train last month when I was in Scotland, but the train was further away. This version shows the locomotive below my shooting position and the smoke in the perfect position. Based on the transportation schedule, I knew when the Glenfinnan viaduct would be traversed. The train was about 13 minutes late, but everyone in my photo tour group got classic images. The magenta flowers in the lower left of the picture were about 50 yards away so I moved them for a more colorful picture. The overcast light was perfect, thus contrast wasn't an issue. My settings were 1/1600 (to make sure the smoke and the train were tack sharp), f/5, 640 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens. A tripod isn't needed with such a fast shutter speed.
