When it comes to capturing compelling images in Africa, the three things I look for the most are babies, great action, and grizzled large males. I'm always on the lookout, for example, for elephants with huge tusks and male lions who have survived for a lot of years. This portraits shows a scarred male with only one good eye testifying to violent confrontations in the past with other lions in order to maintain his dominance. I used a 500mm f/4 Canon telephoto for this shot plus a 1.4x teleconverter for a tight, uncropped picture. My settings were 1/500, f/8, and 200 ISO.
