A technique I use over and over again is to shoot into the sun with a subject close to the camera, and I position myself so the sun is at the edge of the subject. Sometimes it's just peaking over the edge, and other times it's fully visible but still very close to the edge of the subject. In combination with a small lens aperture and a wide angle lens, the sun becomes a star. I think this makes a compelling image. I photographed this picture in Iceland. My favorite subject in nature, aside from wildlife, is blue ice. My next photo tour to Iceland in March, 2017 includes blue ice caves which are simply stunning beyond belief. The settings for this picture were 1/400, f/22, 200 ISO, and I used a 14mm Canon lens.
