Caiman are 70% of the jaguar diet here in the Pantanal region of Brazil, and they are everywhere. They often swim away from our boat as we approach, and to get a clean side view like this takes patience. When we stopped to get this picture, I noticed the waves from our boat created crests and troughs. When a trough of a wave hit the caiman, its intimidating teeth were revealed. That's what I focused my attention on as I took this picture. I shot this with a 500mm telephoto plus a 1.4x teleconverter equaling 700mm of focal length. The settings were 1/1000, f/8, and 1250 ISO. Bobbing up and down in the boat made composition difficult, so I used a fast frame rate (14 fps) in an effort to get at least one frame with the reptile positioned as I wanted.
