I took this picture of meerkats in Namibia just 10 minutes before sunset. The low angled sunlight put a natural looking catchlight into the eyes of the animals, and the 300mm f/2.8 telephoto lens I used made the background totally undefined. That forces all our attention on the meerkats. I shot this while kneeling on the ground to capture this eye-level view. I feel that produced a more intimate portrait of these adorable animals. My settings were 1/1000, f/5, and 320 ISO. More and more I’m using faster shutter speeds to insure wildlife in motion -- or wildlife that might move -- are rendered tack sharp. My next photo tour to Namibia is May, 2021.
