As you can see, lions have a tough life. It's basically all about sleeping, eating, playing, sleeping, mating, sleeping, and eating again. I captured this pride of lions doing what the big cats do best. Sleeping. This isn't an artistic picture, but it has a comedic element that puts a smile on my face every time I see it. I shot this in Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya back in 2007, and at the time I used a Canon 1Ds Mark II. This was my first serious digital camera, and I tried to stay below 1000 ISO because the noise was significant. 3200 was unusable, and 1600 was terribly noisy. I shot this with a 500mm lens, and even on a bean bag, the shutter should have been 1/500th or faster. Given the fact that I purposely kept my ISO low, I shot this with 400 ISO and a shutter of 1/200th. The aperture was f/4. It was on this trip I learned that even if you're using a bean bag -- and not a tripod -- the image stabilization feature should be turned off. A few camera systems and lenses are OK with the IS or VR left on, but in most instances, your pictures won't be sharp.
