When you travel domesticlally or internationally and you're shooting architecture and/or cityscapes, inquire as to which of the iconic landmarks are illuminated at twilight and night. The contrast between the golden lights and the cobalt blue sky is beautiful, and this is what you want to seek out. Tour guides should know which of the city's buildings are lit up every night. This picture of the palace in Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar) is particularly nice because of the artifcial illumination on the architecture. I suggest using daylight (i.e. sunny) white balance as well as a low ISO, a tripod, and the HDR technique. The latter allows you to capture all of the rich detail you see with your eyes. My settings for this image were 6 full seconds, f/8, 200 ISO, and a 24-105mm lens set to 24mm.
