In the early morning here in Hailin, China, it warmed up to a balmy minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit from an overnight low of minus 33. I wore the most serious winter clothing possible – boots rated at minus 100, thermal everything, hand warmers, a Patagonia down jacket plus a winter parka, and a face mask. The problem with the mask was that the condensed water vapor from my breath was directed right into the camera’s viewfinder, which fogged the glass. When I took this picture of tigers, I couldn’t see anything clearly at all. I could only see their shapes, but I trusted the autofocus and got the shot. Fortunately, it’s sharp. I didn’t want to take the time to clean the glass because I might lose the dynamic body positions of the cats. After I took several frames, I then cleaned the glass -- which only stayed clear for a few seconds until I had to clean it again from the fogging.
