This is the ceiling of the mausoleum honoring the conqueror, Tamerlane, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. What strikes me as noteworthy is that, according to historical scholars, this warlord's conquests resulted in the deaths of approximately 17 million people, or 5% of the world population in the 14th century. I used a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 wide angle lens to photograph the spectacular ceiling, and I stood in one of the corners of the square room to do so, That angle, and the distortion of the extreme wide angle, seemed to change the shape of the square into a diamond shape. I hand held the camera in the dim environment, and my settings were 1/125, f/1.8, and 1250 ISO.
