Trees make endlessly fascinating and artistic subjects to photograph. All nature photographers love shooting them, especially when they offer a beautiful or bold graphic design. I found this tree in Michigan about 20 years ago, and it remains a favorite landscape shot. At that time, I was using the Mamiya RZ 67, a medium format film camera, and a hand held Sekonic light meter for determining exposure. In a white on white situation like this, the incident mode on the meter was perfect. Instead of reading the light reflecting from the scene, the incident mode reads the light falling onto the scene from the overcast sky. In this way, the bright white snow can't adversely affect the meter reading. My settings were unrecorded, but knowing how I used to shoot, they were probably 1/f15, f/32, and 50 ISO with Fujichrome Velvia slide film.
