On the first day of my snowy owl workshop in Canada we had wonderful light and a lot of opportunities to photograph these stunning birds. One of my favorite wing positions is shown here where the owl is breaking as it flies right toward the camera and the wings are symmetrically spread as large as possible. My Canon 1Dx Mark II gave a perfect exposure without using any exposure compensation. I used my standard settings for birds in flight: 1/3200th of a second, f/11, auto ISO, and manual exposure mode. These settings insure that even the tips of the wings are sharp, and I have enough depth of field so the entire bird is in focus. I used all the focus points available, daylight white balance, AI servo for continuous focus tracking, and a 100mm - 400mm lens. I hand held the camera for maximum flexibility in camera movement to follow the owl's flight path.
