One of the most compelling portraits I’ve taken in Nepal is this sadu, or holy man, at the most sacred Hindu site in the world. These men give up all worldly things in pursuit of the path to enlightenmen. On a cold and rainy day, the diffused light was perfect to capture the color, texture, and detail in the faces and he clothing of these sadus. After taking the typical tightly composed telephoto shots, I showed my photo tour group how to move in close with a wide angle lens for an unusual perspective. I took shots from a low angle upward as well as from a higher perspective downward. I used the new Canon 16-35mm III, and my settings were 1/320, f/8, 2500 ISO.
