There is a large bloom in California now where many of the areas famous for wildflowers are full of color. When I lived there, this would happen every few years and it was amazing to shoot. I took the picture you see here with film using a Mamiya RZ 67 medium format film camera and a 350mm lens (equivalent to about a 180mm in a full frame digital camera). My lens aperture would have been either f/32 or f/45 – probably the latter for maximum depth of field -- and Fujichrome Velvia 100 film. When I shot medium format, I used to pay approximately one dollar per picture in film and developing! Imagine that. The location for this image is Gorman, California about one hour north of Los Angeles on Interstate 5. You can see the hills ablaze with California poppies and lupine right from the freeway.

Daniel A Reynaud - What a beautiful pic. I'm extremely familiar with this area, however I never had a chance to see it like this or I would have parked my rig on the shoulder just long enough to get a few frames and before a Hwy Patrol ask what was the emergency that forced me to stop on the shoulder !!... This picture should also be a good candidate for a Topaz Impression treatment :)

Jim - Hi Daniel, Thanks very much. Tell the CHP officer that might inquire as to why you stopped your rig on the freeway that great photo opportunities is an emergency!
