When photographing wildlife in motion, I now choose shutter speeds faster than I think I'll need. I err on the side of guaranteed sharpness because I'd get so frustrated with pictures that are 'almost' sharp. I photographed this mountain lion in deep snow during my last winter wildlife workshop in Montana with a 100-400mm telephoto and with a frame rate of 14 fps. With so many frames taken every second, again I'm erring on the side of maximizing my chances of capturing something especially compelling. What I like about this picture is the crouched body language and the intensity of the cat's expression. I also like the undisturbed snow in the background. My settings were 1/1250, f/14, 2500 ISO. I am no longer concerned about using high ISO settings because the noise can be eliminated by Topaz DeNoise or Neat Image software. My next winter wildlife workshop starts Jan. 12.
