Hippos are not so easy to photograph. If they are just laying around or submerged in water, great photo moments are not usually there for the taking. Sometimes, though, serendipity happens. I was able to get this shot from a cliff above the Mara River in Kenya where my photo tour group stopped for breakfast. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto, hand held, and the settings were 1/1000, f/4.5, and 200 ISO. Even though this was about 3 hours after sunrise, with the sun fairly high in the sky, the angle of the lighting was perfect. I got lucky. Notice all of the animals are sharp even though I used a large aperture; this is a function of the subjects-to-camera distance. The greater the distance, the more depth of field you'll have.
