I find photographing roses to be a significant challenge. This is probably the only picture of a rose I really like. So much depends on the shape and design of the petals, how the contours interact, and of course the lighting. I took this shot in the lobby of a hotel in Costa Rica, and for me at least everything worked. I happened to be carrying a ring flash on this particular trip, and that's what I used. In post-processing, I added a little diffusion and darkened the periphery of the image with the burn tool on 50% opacity. I used a 50mm macro lens, and the settings were 1/60, f/32, and 320 ISO.
