This is a very unusual bird. It is a hoatzin, and genetic research indicates it is the last surviving member of a genus of birds that branched off and evolved separately about 64 million years ago, just before the dinosaurs when extinct. It's chicks have claws on the tips of their wings. I shot this from a pontoon boat on an oxbow lake, and I used a 500mm lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length. Still, I had to crop the image to create this tight framing. My settings were 1/1600, f/10, and 6400 ISO. I was hoping to capture it in flight, but I missed that opportunity. It took off when I was changing batteries.
