I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada right now in the middle of my workshop for photographing great grey owls. This morning when we left the hotel it was - 17 degrees Fahrenheit, but by midday it warmed up to a balmy 2 degrees. Almost felt like summer! The owls are beautiful, and some of them are comfortable enough to allow a close approach. This one posed for us in beautiful low angled lighting. I used a 100-500mm Canon zoom and was able to fill the frame. My goal, of course, is to get wonderful shots of the owls in flight; I'll post one of those tomorrow. My settings for this were 1/3200, f/8, and 3200 ISO. These are the settings for flight shots; I was hoping the bird would take flight. Even though owls don't flap their large wings nearly as fast as smaller birds, I used a super fast shutter to freeze even the wing tips. I prefer to err on the side of sharpness.
