In northern New Mexico there are large areas known as 'badlands', and over millions of years nature has carved some remarkable formations. This is one of them. It's called King of Wings. Just before sunset, the sun grazes the underside of the rock extension perfectly providing defined texture and beautiful color. My 16mm focal length exaggerated the length of the formation because I was positioned so close to it, and at the same time the wide angle lens made the sky intensely blue as if I'd used a polarizing filter, which I did not. My settings were 1/125, f/18, and 1600. This place is very hard to find, and it requires a Navajo guide for two reasons: 1) so you can find it in the seemingly endless desert, and 2) for safety should anything happen such that medical attention might be needed. A local guide would know how to make that happen. There was no phone reception here, hence the need for a safety net.
