On my Abandoned in Georgia photo tour, one of the great places we visit is Old Car City located about an hour north of Atlanta. After shooting in the afternoon, we have a night session in which I use a flashlight to paint the old rusting cars with light. It's not possible to take a light reading with this kind of photography, so I begin by doing a few test exposures. Since this is done in the dark, the shutter speed isn't relevant in determining the exposure. Instead, the variables are the lens aperture, the ISO, the intensity of the light, and the distance of the flashlight to the subject. For this shot, the settings were 13 seconds (I need enough time to enable me to paint the entire scene with light), f/8, and 800 ISO. I used a 24-105mm lens set to 24mm. My next Abandoned in Georgia tour starts April 21.
