Mottled lighting, typical of shooting in a rainforest under a clear sky, is the worst. I try to avoid it at all costs. Sometimes, though, an opportunity presents itself and there is simply no choice but to shoot and, hopefully, in post-processing I can deal with the terrible contrast so it isn't too offensive. I photographed this ocelot at the edge of a river in Guatemala many years ago, and using the clone tool and the burn and dodge tools, I did my best to tone down the highlights, lighten shadows, and clone out some of the distracting highlights. What saved this image, I feel, is the highlight on the cat's face. I took this with a 500mm telephoto, and my settings were 1/250, f/7.1, and 1600 ISO.
