Whenever I teach Photoshop, I always end up producing new images to demonstrate various techniques. I taught the fourth session of my Next Level Photoshop online training yesterday, and this image was created to show the students how they can use 3D in Photoshop. I combined a 3D abstraction with a 2D portrait. The abstract is a fractal I converted first to a bump map (Filter > 3D > Generate bump [height] map), and this was followed by the command 3D > New Mesh from Layer > Depth map to > plane. I flattened the 3D extruded image, added a gradient of color, and then used the ‘blend if’ sliders in the Layer Style dialog box to combine the two images. The original fractal was created on my iPad with the app ‘Frax’, and I took the portrait of the model with available light. I then smoothed her skin so it looked like porcelain using the program Portrait Professional.
