This is an emerald tanager I photographed in Costa Rica. I photographed it at a feeder where pieces of papaya and watermelon were placed on a platform to attract birds. In the original shot, there is a large piece of papaya right next to the tanager. In addition, you can see the manmade platform itself which, obviously, is not ideal. To solve the problem, I selected the bird and pasted it onto a natural looking branch. I had to be very careful with the feet, though, because the foreground foot is sharp while the foot in the background has lost focus. The branch on which I placed the tanager had to show the same degree of focus fall-off. I wasn’t sure I could pull this off, but I think it worked out well. The settings for the original capture were 1/2000, f/9, and 2500 ISO.
