One of my favorite images from the recent photo tour to Newfoundland is the sunrise HDR image of Cape Bonavista Light. It is a 7-frame composite. I set one of the custom functions on my camera to make this happen. All the parameters -- the number of frames, the f/stop, the ISO, and the frame increments are all set. All I have to do is choose C1 and the camera does the rest. I used a 16-35mm lens, and I placed the camera just 4 or 5 feet from the immediate foreground to make it disproportionately large compared to the background. I think this is a very dramatic look. This structure was built in 1843, and it is no longer operational. Instead, a modern, automated (and very ugly) tower was built right next to it, and that is what guides ships today. I cloned out the new structure and digitally added a light (with the brush tool) in the tower. My settings were f/16 and 500 ISO. The rays around the sun come from the use of a small lens aperture with a point source of light.

Jim - Hi Bob. Thanks. With landscapes, especially, good foregrounds make or break the picture.

Jim - Thank you for the compliment, Barbara. About your 'lucky guess', this does have the look of either the U.S. northeast or the Canadian east.

Bob Vestal - Great foreground and great image overall. After our conversation in March, I am starting to look hard to good foreground subjects.

Barbara Vickers - Another beautiful shot. Before I read the caption I wondered where is the location. I decided it was Newfoundland or Prince Edward Island. Lucky guess?
