I photographed these white rhinos in Namibia just as the sun was setting. The sun was softened and diffused by dust in the air which is why there are no harsh shadows. The Canon 500mm f/4 lens I used compressed the elements in the scene, and that accounts for the seemingly close proximity of the trees with the animals. My shutter speed was only 1/200th of a second. This is too slow when using such a long lens, but I was trying to keep the ISO low with the Canon 5D Mark II. Noise was a significant consideration several years ago. Today, raising the ISO to 3200 and above isn’t a major problem, and that in turn allows us to use much faster shutter speeds and, if necessary, smaller lens apertures without concern for noise. My other settings were f/4 and 500 ISO.
