This is a woman of the Hamar tribe in the Omo River Valley of Ethiopia. I photographed her against a piece of black velvet, and even though I took the picture at sunrise, I blocked the sunlight with the fabric so she was lit only by soft and diffused daylight. The highlights on her cheekbones, nose, lips, and hair are from reflecting the sky even though it looks like I used a reflector, which I didn't. I should have used a smaller lens aperture so her more distant eye would have been as sharp as the foreground eye. Nevertheless, this is a favorite portrait of mine from Africa. The Hamar are known for their uniquely styled hair that's created from water, goat fat, and red ochre. It can take up to three days of work to create this complex hairdo. My settings for this shot were 1/320, f/4, and 500 ISO, and I used a 70-200mm lens.
