It is difficult to capture an intimate portrait of a warthog because most of the time, these animals are running away from the camera. As soon as you stop the Land Rover and point a telephoto at them, they turn their back on you and, with their tail held high, they quickly disappear in the bush. In this instance, I was shooting at water level from a subterranean blind, and the warthog had no idea my photo tour group and I were intimately close and shooting through a one-way optically superior piece of glass. The interior of the room in which we were sitting was painted black, and we didn't talk because animals have acute hearing. I used a 200mm focal length for this, and the settings were 1/640, f/5.0, and 2000 ISO. A little bit of light was lost due to the glass, but this was a small price to pay for such dramatic images.
