This is stunning Kaindy Lake at 6300 feet in elevation in Kazakhstan. It was formed after an earthquake in 1911, and the spruce trees in the small valley were drowned in the cold mountain water. They've resisted complete decay due to the cold. I took this shot from an elevated point of view after driving on a torturous mountain road above the lake. The deep blue color are shadows of trees on a high ridge overlooking the lake, and the turquoise color typifies glacial melt. The midday sunlight was responsible for revealing these beautiful colors. My settings for this picture were 1/160, f/14 (to make sure I had complete depth of field), and 1600 ISO. I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom hand held.

George Kistler - The New York Times has an article on Trips you could make and be a better photographer. I cannot believe that your trips were not included.
