I captured this shot five years ago in the Pantanal region of Brazil during one of my photo tours to this amazing place. It's a giant river otter who just caught a fish in sunrise lighting. I was lying on the bottom of the boat and resting my long lens on the gunwale specifically to be able to shoot from as low as possible. This wasn't very comfortable, but the water-level perspective made all the difference. I didn't expect to get what you see here, but as I was focusing on the otter in the river getting ready to shoot, it caught the fish. A lucky moment for sure. Fourteen frames per second made it possible to capture every nuance of the action. I took this with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. Because long lenses magnify movement, I was already set up with a fast shutter speed. Fortunately, that enabled me to freeze the water drops that just happened to be arranged in an S-curve. My settings were 1/2000, f/5.6, and 3200. This is uncropped.
