The first two times I hiked to The Wave, a spectacular sandstone formation between Page, Arizona and Kanab, Utah, very few people knew it existed. This was the 1980's. I only discovered it because I was photographing in the area and met a guy who was a Grand Canyon river guide. He saw I was serious about photography and asked if I’d ever seen this amazing place with incredible striations in stone. I hadn’t, so he took me there and I was truly incredulous at the stunning natural beauty. I returned a year later, and this time it was a day after a rainstorm so the basin was filled with water. There were no markers back then, and I was surprised I could find it again in the desert. I shot this with a Mamiya 7 medium format film camera using a 43mm wide angle lens. This is equivalent to about a 21mm lens in the full frame digital format. This was the widest angle I had available without going to a fisheye. I used a tripod, and my settings were probably 1/15, f/32, and I used Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO for all my landscape work.
